(In)visibilities About the Vulnerabilities of People with Visual Impairments to Disasters and Climate Change: A Case Study in Cuiabá, Brazil

Abstract People with visual impairments (PwVI) represent a heterogeneous social group who often experience significant disabling barriers in exercising their rights throughout life course. Understanding dimensions of vulnerability PwVI to disasters and climate change is an important issue reduce the culture neglected disasters. To date, few studies have analyzed impairment disaster risk reduction (DRR) countries Latin America Caribbean. This exploratory qualitative research project how include DRR policies Brazil. The question is: can we discussion change? response this part joint effort that involved university, hazard monitoring agency, three institutions work PwVI. main results are: (1) mapping method identify exposure landslides floods, create tactile maps tailored them; (2) incorporating voices regarding vulnerabilities capacities respect change, achieved through shared interaction during 15 face interviews one workshop attended by 100 people; (3) initiative inclusive education some intensify vulnerability.
